To reach the Goisern Hut: We begin our hike, which takes around two and a half hours, at the "Trockentann" (Nordic Centre) car park in the Ramsau neighbourhood. It is an easy drive to the car park. We can already see, towering above us, the isolated hut, just below the summit of the Kalmberg.

We follow the forest track which is well sign -posted. Look out for the toboggans hurtling down towards us in winter, as the track is a popular toboggan run. Soon we reach the mountain huts of the "Trockentann-Alm".

At this point the terrain becomes much steeper. The path winds its way upwards through woodland and past the Wallmann-Poidl-Rast - a small log building where you can take a welcome rest. We come out of the thick forest at last, cross some areas of scree, and again walk through some trees. From here there are spectacular views of the extensive Goisern valleyand Lake Hallstatt. From here it is just a further few minutes' walk to the catered Goisern Hut. You can choose to spend the night here and admire breath-taking sunsets.

To return from the Kalmberg back to the valley: After rest and refreshments we head for the Hoher Kalmberg. The path weaves its way between the pine trees, passing the "Kalmooskirche". This is one of the most impressive caves in the region. The cave is one of the many fortune bringing places in the Dachstein Salzkammergut region. During the Reformation, Protestants used to meet here to have secret religious services.

We continue our way to the summit of the Hoher Kalmberg which takes around 45 minutes. Here you must take the time to fully appreciate the picture postcard views of the entire Dachstein Salzkammergut region. There are views towards Bad Ischl and the Traunsee when looking in one direction, and views of Gosau, the Dachstein and the Aussee region to the other side. You might even catch a glimpse of the Grossglockner in the distance.

Slowly we begin our descent. Follow the trail via the Hochmuth, and in 2.5 to 3 hours, we will be back in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt.

An alternative is to climb to the the Goisern Hut from Gosau. This route is longer but is less steep. Enjoy stunning mountain views all along the way.
