This full day hike is challenging yet rewarding. Starting at the lower Sarsteinalm, we follow a beautiful mountain track which allows us to admire alpine plants as we wend our way upwards to the summit of the Sarstein. Looking back to the north we have magnificent views of the rest of the Salzkammergut, starting with the Gosau and Salzburg mountain ranges. There are also views towards the Katergebirge and the Schafberg (mountains) and it is possible to see as far as the Traunstein and the Altaussee and Grundlsee lakes as well as the Toten Gebirge mountain range.
Suddenly the mighty Dachstein with its "ermine" comes back into view and we reach the cross at the summit of the Sarstein (1975 metres). The view is breath-taking. The mountains of Styria "appear" before us and down below in the distance we see the market town of Hallstatt with its lake reminiscent of a fjord. Hallstatt lies literally at the foot of the Dachstein.
Here opens up to you the most magnificent scenery of the alpine world. Take the opportunity to rest on the soft mountain grass. We "befriend" the mountain jackdaws. There are mountain goats and of course sheep grazing all around this area.
After a well-earned rest we continue our way towards Obertraun and traverse, so to speak, the whole of the Sarstein. The way is less strenuous, giving our legs a rest, as our route takes us along the other side of the mountain and we can enjoy views of the Dachstein, Aussee region and Hallstatt.
One hour later we have reached the Sarsteinhuette (mountain hut) at Obertraun (1650m). We then begin a steep, winding descent to Obertraun. We reach the valley in around 3 hours. From here we can travel back to Hallstatt or Steeg by rail, bus or taxi.
It is also possible to do this hike the other way round. I am sure you will agree that this is one of the most wonderful hiking tours you will ever experience. There are pictures in the following links:
