Summer
This little mountain lake is under a nature preservation order. The cold, crystal clear water is of drinking water quality, and provides perfect living conditions for numerous species of fish.
With the highest mountain in the Salzkammergut in the background, the lake is one of the most photographed icons of the entire region.
Alexander Freiherr von Humbold, world traveller and naturalist, described the Gosau Lake as the "crowning glory of the valley, nestling amongst the magnificent walls and towers of the Dachstein". He also refers to the lake as the "eye of God" in all its splendour.
Just 25 km from the Gosau Lake is Lake Hallstatt, embedded between Bad Goisern, Obertraun and Hallstatt.
