Schmiedsteig Via Ferrata

This via ferrata is situated close to the Gosau valley. Of medium difficulty and easy access, the via ferrata can be accessed, easily and safely, even when the weather is not so good.

Description:
The via ferrata traverses the massive rock faces high above the reservoir in Gosau Hintertal. The first section is graded "B" and "C" in terms of difficulty, and begins 50m south of the water basin. The route is a traverse to the end of the rock section. The access to the main part of the climb is described as "short but strenuous" and graded D - E. This is a vertical ascent from the middle of the rock. Section 2 is mainly B grade, and is an upwards diagonal traverse of an inclined slab wall. After a short forested section, the 3rd part of the tour (graded B and C) is a return to the start (Wandbuch) by means of a ladder and a rope bridge.

Predominantly B with some short C sections.

Access:
From Gosau to Gosauschmied Inn where there is car parking available.
Directions:
From the Gosauschmied car park, walk over to the stream and then bear right on to a forest path along the lakeshore. Turn off for Klamml/Ebenalm. Follow this trail for 50 m until you reach a turn off for the start of the via ferrata. Approx. 15 mins from the Gosauschmied.
Descent:
Following the trail marked yellow,you reach the Baeralm (no refreshments available) after about 20 minutes. Continue to follow this lovely mountain pasture trail, and you will be back at the reservoir and the Gosauschmied in approx. 40 minutes.
Safety Notes:
Steel rope, curved foot bolts and U-bolts with low risk of injury.

Please be aware that the hunting season is from 1st April to 15th September. Please use the via ferrata only between 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset.
