Higher Gosau Lake
Gosau High Mountain Express
A shuttle service of an extraordinary kind is the High Mountain Express in the Gosau Valley. Enjoy being transported by tractor and trailer, like never before, up to the Higher Gosau Lake.

We begin our journey by the Lower Gosau Lake, which is deeply embedded between the Gosaukamm mountain range and the Ebenalm plateau. After passing through a narrow, hollowed-out rocky section, we reach the Holzmeister pasture area. Along the way we pass by babbling mountain streams and rushing waterfalls. It takes around three quarters of an hour to reach the Higher Gosau Lake.
Once you reach the lake there are lovely views of the Upper Holmeisteralm and the "Jagdhaus" (Huntsman's Hut). Along the way we pass by huge boulders of rock which have been brought down during heavy rain and storms. Our destination is, however, an idyllic mountain pasture where you can sit and relax and enjoy the lovely views from the seating area by the hut. The sounds of the cowbells gently ringing add to the atmosphere. You can choose to return to the Lower Gosau Lake either by High mountain Express or on foot.

At the end of the valley, behind the Higher Gosau Lake, is the Upper Holzmeisteralm at 1164 m. You can reach this mountain pasture by following a stone trail in about an hour and a half. The whole of your natural surroundings are completely unspoilt. Besides the impressive mountain views, you can enjoy delicious home-made refreshments from "Grandma's Kitchen". The proprietor of the mountain hut is always happy to tell visitors about how the area was established as pasture land, about how catering began at the hut, and also about small and more serious natural catastrophies in the area.
In the hot summer months the Higher Gosau Lake, just a few metres from the hut, is an inviting place to bathe and cool down. Those of you who wish to spend more time here can spend the night on a matress on the floor and then admire the new dawn in all its glory.

An additional area of mountain pasture land owned by the Schweighofer Family is situated in the "Natura 2000". A visit here is an unforgetable experience and is a chance to admire magnificent mountain scenery. The "Gosaulacken Hut" was established in 1787 and remains today structurally mostly unchanged. In the main hut
10 to 25 persons can spend the night on rustic wooden bunks. Regional food specialities such as Kaiserschmarrn and game ragout are cooked on an
open fire.
At the end of the day the atmosphere becomes even more magical. There is the well-known "Dachstein Glow", and as there is no electricity in the hut, the only light is from candles and the open fire.
The little lake overflows in the spring, and so the whole of the pasture land is flooded. Hence the name
Gosaulacke (puddle).
