Transport up to the grindstone quarries on the Ressenberg and the Löckernmoos Nature Preservation Area. Guided tours.
The Löckernmoos is a large Nature Preservation Area. The Hochmoor above the grindstone deposits was formed at the end of the Ice Age. The focus throughout the guided tours is climatic change and the plantlife which is individual to the area. The catered mountain huts on the Grubalm mountain pasture are also a topic of interest. We pass the legendary Wildfrauenloch along our way. Here we can learn a little about subterranean water drainage in the Dachstein mountains.
The grindstone quarries on the Ressenberg are a major cultural asset for Gosau. Grindstone has been mined here for at least 500 years, and blocks of grindstone sold well throughout the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In the last few decades mining was ceased and then re-commenced. Mining began again as local people wanted to uphold their ancient rights to the stone, and, above all, they sought to maintain time-honoured methods of grindstone quarrying passed down through the generations.
Tours of the grindstone quarries and the Löckernmoos are led by specially trained guides with scientific knowledge of the area. Minimum 4 persons per tour, and reservations are essential.
Transport provided:
9.30 from Tourist Information in Gosau
10.00 from the fork in the forest road (Geigerbach)
Circular guided tour approx. 10.30 - 14.00
Return to the valley at approx. 15.00 or otherwise by prior arrangement.
Length of tour: 4 km with a small difference in altitude
