12 000 square metre family theme park in Gosau
All exhibits are based on life from the Precambrian (around 4 billion years to 600 million years ago) to the Quaternary period which began around 2.6 million years ago, and includes modern day.
The journey through millions of years in time begins with a “visit” to a huge jellyfish (about 2 metres long) which can be walked on. This is a prime example of the origins of water life. Next we discover the trilobites and the first fishes, the very first amphibians, and the giant insects of the Carboniferous period. We then enter the desert-like conditions of the Permian and then “meet” the large prehistoric reptiles of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
As you visit the different stations, there are lots of physical challenges too. Perhaps you might like to balance above shallow water on the back of the “Anomalocaris” – an enormous trilobite about 3 metres long. You can also swing through the woods on a giant, prehistoric winged creature. Highlight of the visit is undoubtedly a “flight” on the back of a pterosaur, a flying archosaurian reptile. With his five metre wingspan, he can carry four people at a time through the primeval forest. The final station is dedicated to the Stone Age. Here you learn about the culture and lives of prehistoric people. You can learn to light a fire using Hornstein lime stones or catch fish using a rod with a primeval float. Climb up the life-size mammoth (3 metres high) and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the entire theme park.
Time flies by
100 minutes or 6000 seconds pass by here all too quickly. There is, however, a centrally situated relaxation area with food and refreshments available. Visitors can have their own barbecue here too. A visit to the “Gosau Primeval Forest” is a journey through 600 million years in earth’s history, and is fun for guests of all ages. Behind every tree lies a surprise just waiting to be discovered. The theme park is yet another fantastic opportunity to get out and enjoy the fresh mountain air of the Inner Salzkammergut. As the saying goes, “Gosau is Geology”.
