The "Ostufer Wanderweg" (east-bank-trail) begins opposite the boat pier. This is situated close to the bathing area, about 5 minutes' walk from the railway station. This is also the starting point of the Obertraun Höhenweg. But we continue along the railway line towards Schloss Grub. This private property is fenced off and we have no access rights.

Soon you will notice that your are on a nature-study trail There are signs all along the trail which provide details of the rich variety of plant life around us

Next to the railway hut we again come to the bank of the Hallstätter Lake. From here, you have a lovely view of the 4.500 year old salt mining community. In a half-hour we reach the Hallstatt railway station and the boat jetty. Our path leads further along the railway line, over a romantic suspension bridge and along a secure rock path, then on to a smaller path alongside the lake.

After about an hour we reach the railway station at Obersee and the "Wanderwegstüberl" , where we obtain our hiking stamp. Enjoy the lovely view to the west bank of the Hallstatt lake and the Gosaumühle peninsula. Obersee has not only a railway station but also a boat station serving Steeg and Hallstatt.
After a well-deserved rest we can carry on toward Steeg. After a further hour we come to Au on the main road and the Steeg-Gosau railway station.

From here we can travel back to Hallstatt by bus, boat or rail. Those who still have the energy and two to three hours spare, can walk back from Steeg on the Soleleitungsweg or the main road to Hallstatt and Obertraun. The hike around the Hallstättersee lake is a tour lasting a whole day and takes around seven hours.
